About

Helping you find your true voice.

Award-winning performer and singing teacher Mairi Armstrong’s career has spanned stages, countries, language and genres. From London's West End to her comprehensive vocal workshops, Mairi has found her greatest joy in helping others pursue their passion for music while continuing to follow her own.

Mairi fell in love with singing at age eight. As a young woman, her striking stage presence and voice led her from tiny village halls to stages of prestigious theatres, embassies, and concert halls throughout the UK, Europe, and Scandinavia.

Some of Mairi's earliest performances were as a contestant in the Borders Music Festival, where she won multiple awards in Scots Songs, English Songs, and Duets. When she was just 16 years old, she won the Solo Singing Award at the Edinburgh Competitive Festival after performing for judge - and notable English Opera Group member - John Shirley-Quirk.

Mairi auditioned for The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now ‘The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’), where she studied with Head of Vocal Studies and Opera, David G. Kelly. Here, she earned her Performing Singing and Teaching Singing diplomas, received the Subject Prize for Singing, and was awarded the John Leishman Scholarship for Singing. The latter enabled her to travel to London, where she attained an Advanced Studies Certificate at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under the tutelage of Noelle Barker OBE.

After graduating, Mairi performed in various shows in and around London as she worked to attain her Equity Card. She landed her first job at The Player's Theatre in London in their pantomime, and participated in the Summer Season in Newquay, Cornwall.

Throughout her career, Mairi has sung folk, musical theatre, opera, oratorio, Lieder, and French compositions.

In 1982, Mairi performed in The Pirates of Penzance at The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. The following year, she starred as Maria in the UK Tour of West Side Story, performing at The Leicester Haymarket, Manchester Palace, Wolverhampton Grand and Birmingham Hippodrome.

In addition to her West End credits, Mairi has toured the Scottish Borders with RideOut and performed throughout London as a member of the variety act The Cupboard. In 2004, she recorded her debut album, Songs from Elsewhere, with Maartin Allcock at Blue Moon Studios in Banbury.

For 35 years, Mairi has lent her experience and professional guidance to others.

Mairi honed her abilities as a singing teacher in London by leading various singing workshops and choirs, teaching classes in secondary schools, and producing concerts featuring her talented students and friends. Now based in Limekilns, Scotland, she has actively and passionately cultivated a supportive, encouraging, and engaging environment for students to improve their vocal technique and develop their authentic sound. In addition to her private lessons and group workshops, Mairi runs a local vocal group, The Kiln Singers.
